Disruptions in global crude oil supply chains have forced the Rehman government to take urgent measures to stabilize the country. In a landmark decision, the Ministry of Education ordered the closure of all government and private universities nationwide to curb electricity consumption.
University Shutdowns Aim to Conserve Power
Signed by Sultan Ahmed, Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Education, the orders highlight high energy usage in university hostels, laboratories, and classrooms due to air conditioning and lighting. Closing these facilities eases pressure on the national grid, reduces student and staff travel, saves transport fuel, and decreases urban traffic congestion. Private institutions and coaching centers offering foreign curricula have also been directed to suspend operations temporarily.
Middle East Tensions Disrupt Energy Imports
Bangladesh relies on imports for 95% of its energy, primarily from the Middle East. Rising regional tensions have disrupted supply, causing severe shortages of gas and petroleum products. To address the deficit, the government is purchasing LNG at premium rates from the spot market. Additionally, four out of five government fertilizer factories have been temporarily shut to redirect gas to power generation.
Government Imposes Conservation and Sales Measures
To prevent panic buying, authorities have imposed limits on fuel sales at petrol stations and issued strict guidelines for reducing unnecessary lighting and streetlight usage. Officials warn that these measures may remain in place until energy reserves stabilize. The crisis underscores how international geopolitical tensions are significantly affecting Bangladesh’s daily life and education system.
