Tehran: Protests across Iran continue to escalate, with the death toll reportedly surpassing 3,000. The government led by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has shown no signs of retreat and is attempting to crush the unrest through military action. Security forces are carrying out mass arrests of protesters, and reports claim that executions are also being carried out as part of the crackdown.
US Support, Iran Issues Defiant Threats
Amid the worsening situation, the United States, including President Donald Trump, has openly expressed support for the protesters. Reports have also suggested that the US military is preparing for possible action against Iran. However, Tehran appears unfazed by these developments. Instead, Iran has issued direct threats, including warnings against President Trump, signalling that it is not intimidated by US pressure.
Confidence Rooted in Nuclear Capability
Analysts believe Iran’s defiance is largely driven by confidence in its nuclear strength. Despite facing international pressure and past military strikes, Tehran is believed to be relying on its nuclear assets as a strategic shield. This confidence is seen as the reason Iran is refusing to yield to US warnings and is escalating its rhetoric.
Underground Nuclear Facilities Raise Concerns
According to recent intelligence reports, Iran has developed new, highly secure underground nuclear facilities. A large subterranean plant is said to have been established near the old Natanz site in the Peacock Mountains, deeper and more fortified than the Fordow facility, with multiple layers of concrete at depths of 80 to 100 metres. In addition, construction of another site, known as Taleghan-2, near the older Taleghan facility is reportedly nearing completion. These facilities are believed to be designed to withstand future attacks, reinforcing Iran’s confidence amid rising regional tensions.
