The United States has reiterated that it enforces visa rules with zero tolerance, warning that even minor violations can lead to visa cancellation, deportation, and permanent ineligibility for future visas. In a recent post on X, the US Embassy in India cautioned Indian students studying in the US to strictly comply with American laws, stressing that a visa is not a right but an opportunity. The embassy warned that irresponsible or unlawful activities could invite serious consequences.
The warning comes amid major changes to the US student visa framework. Authorities have significantly increased visa-related fees, made social media screening mandatory, and imposed limits on the duration of stay for international students. Currently, foreign students pursue education on F-1 visas, while exchange visitors enter on J-1 visas. Earlier, students could continue staying in the US under the “Duration of Status” provision even after visa expiry, as long as they were enrolled in studies or internship programs.

However, the US Department of Homeland Security has now revised this policy, allowing visas only for a fixed period. The new rule is expected to have a major impact on Indian students, who form one of the largest international student communities in the US. With over 3.3 lakh Indians currently studying at American universities, many of whom traditionally sought employment opportunities after graduation, the tightened norms are likely to significantly restrict post-study stay options.
