Sri Lanka is reeling under severe flooding triggered by continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days due to Cyclone Dithva. Flash floods and landslides have caused large-scale destruction across multiple regions. According to the Disaster Management Centre, 56 people have died so far and 21 others are reported missing.

More than 600 houses and schools have been damaged, while several bridges have been washed away. Roads and farmlands remain submerged. Officials said nearly 12,000 houses collapsed in landslides. Search and rescue teams are working round the clock to locate those trapped under the debris and those swept away by floodwaters.

Government Shuts Down Schools and Offices as Precaution

Authorities have confirmed that Cyclone Dithva has not yet made landfall and is expected to reach the coast in two days. However, its impact has already been severe, with Sri Lanka emerging as the worst-affected region.

The government has ordered the closure of all government offices and schools and suspended railway services across affected districts. Security forces and disaster response teams have been deployed to carry out rescue and relief operations.

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of further heavy rainfall in several parts of the country over the next 48 hours. Citizens have been strictly advised to stay alert and avoid flooded areas.
