US President Donald Trump has reportedly drafted a 28-point peace proposal aimed at ending the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war. According to several international media outlets, Trump urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to accept the plan within a week. However, Zelensky has rejected the proposal, citing that key elements are heavily tilted in Russia’s favour.
As per the proposed plan, Ukraine would be required to hand over Crimea, Donbas, Luhansk, and parts of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia to Russia. The proposal also mandates that Ukraine must never join NATO. In exchange for offering security guarantees to Ukraine, the United States would receive compensation, and these guarantees would be withdrawn if Ukraine were to attack Russia. The plan further suggests gradually lifting sanctions on Moscow, reintegrating Russia into the global economic system, signing long-term agreements with Russia in sectors like oil, natural resources and infrastructure, and facilitating Russia’s return to the G8 alliance.
Zelensky has strongly opposed the plan, reiterating that Ukraine will not surrender any part of its territory. His administration maintains that giving away land contradicts the aspirations of the Ukrainian people. He also objected to the condition barring NATO membership, arguing that it is essential for Ukraine’s future security. Ukrainian officials have criticised the proposal as being overwhelmingly favourable to Russia. Reports also indicate that US senators have suggested the plan reflects Russian interests rather than America’s. Amid these developments, Zelensky asserted that Ukraine is facing an extremely challenging phase and stated that the country is prepared to even rethink its ties with the US if required to safeguard national interests.
