Johannesburg: At the G20 annual summit in Johannesburg, member countries adopted a joint declaration reaffirming global commitment to sovereignty and territorial integrity. The statement emphasized that no country should use force or threats to alter internationally recognized borders. While the United States raised objections, most G20 nations fully endorsed the declaration.

The statement condemned terrorism in all its forms and stressed respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, irrespective of nationality, gender, language, or religion. It also highlighted concerns over rising geopolitical tensions, armed conflicts, and economic fragmentation, calling on countries to refrain from threats or coercion for territorial or political gains. Diplomats viewed the declaration as an implicit message to Russia, Israel, and Myanmar.

The G20 reaffirmed adherence to international law, peaceful dispute resolution, and the principles of the G20 Charter and humanitarian law. Member states pledged support to small island nations and least developed countries affected by disasters, reaffirmed the right to food security, and highlighted equitable use of emerging technologies, including AI, for public welfare. South Africa’s Minister of International Relations, Ronald Lamola, described the declaration’s adoption as “a great moment” that will benefit the African continent significantly.
