French authorities have arrested two suspects in connection with the audacious jewel theft at the Louvre Museum in Paris, which occurred a week ago. The stolen items, dating back to the Napoleonic era, were valued at approximately USD 102 million (around ₹850 crore).

A special task force of over 100 police officers conducted the investigation, leading to the arrest of one suspect at Charles de Gaulle Airport while attempting to flee the country, and the other in the outskirts of Paris. Both individuals are reported to be around 30 years old.

The robbery, described as “movie-style,” took place in broad daylight on October 19, 2025. A gang of four thieves used an extendable ladder mounted on a truck to scale the Louvre building and cut into the Apollo Gallery. In just seven minutes, they made off with eight historically significant jewels, including a diamond-and-emerald necklace gifted to Empress Marie-Louise, Napoleon Bonaparte’s second wife, and sapphire-encrusted pieces belonging to 19th-century queens Marie-Amélie and Hortense.

During their escape, one emerald- and diamond-studded crown was accidentally dropped outside the museum and recovered in a damaged state. French police continue to investigate the incident and assess any potential accomplices.
