Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Friday declared a health emergency in Thurakapalem village of Guntur district, where a spate of mysterious deaths has been reported over the last two months.

During an emergency review meeting, the CM instructed officials to provide immediate hospitalisation and critical treatment for severely ill patients. Health officials suspect the symptoms resemble Melioidosis and have sent blood samples to laboratories, with results expected within 72 hours.

Authorities noted that villagers rely heavily on cattle rearing, raising concerns about bacterial transmission from livestock. They also flagged a high incidence of diabetes, hypertension, cardiac issues, brain strokes, and heavy alcohol consumption in the area. Additionally, the presence of numerous stone crushers has prompted checks on air quality.

The CM was informed that the illness, showing symptoms such as fever, cough, and lung damage, can be controlled with a six-week antibiotic regimen. Naidu directed that AIIMS and central health teams be deployed and suggested seeking international medical expertise if required.
