Thailand’s Constitutional Court has removed Prime Minister Shinawatra from office, along with her entire cabinet, following a leaked phone conversation that sparked national controversy. In the call, she reportedly discussed domestic issues and disputes with military commanders with former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.
The court ruled that, given the historically strained relations between Thailand and Cambodia over border disputes, it was a breach of ethical and constitutional norms for the Thai Prime Minister to discuss sensitive internal matters with a foreign leader. Shinawatra was found to have violated constitutional provisions on the moral conduct expected of a national leader, leading to her suspension.
This marks another instance of Thailand’s judiciary enforcing constitutional compliance. Former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin was also removed from office for constitutional violations, particularly for including individuals with criminal records in his cabinet. In both cases, the Constitutional Court played a decisive role in upholding the country’s constitutional and ethical standards.
